Building intimate relationship with plants is the heart of the People’s Medicine School and our favorite way to do that is together, in community, with land, plants and each other!!

This FREE immersion, in celebration of Black August is for the Black Community.

Remembering the Clay that Formed Us, is a free/ donation based, 3 day weekend clay immersion that supports connection with the land, the recalling of craft, and joy in togetherness. Clay and claywork has a rich and widely forgotten legacy within the Black community. From cultural preservation, food, celebration, protection, spiritual connection, and more, clay and the creation of clay vessels, faces, and objects played a central role in Black culture and tradition, originating from the African continent, and surviving through enslavement, emancipation, and beyond. Unfortunately, these crafts and histories became wildly inaccessible for many through hundreds of years of intentional erasure, the colonization of indigenous craft, and the subsequent bolstering of “fine arts”. During this weekend we will remember as an act of liberation, we will play with clay, learn hand building techniques, and construct forms influenced by clay art, vessels, and sculptures from our lineage: face jugs, water vessels, protective amulets, burial vessels, and more.

Our time together will be:

• Friday 4-7pm
  including an opening and welcome, camp set-up, altar building, setting intentions, garden tour, dinner, fire…

• Saturday 10am - 5pm
  including tea, lunch, dinner, gardening, clay creek walk, medicine making, intro to hand-building, clay-making, fire…

• Sunday 11am - 4pm (optional)
  including tea, snacks, community garden work party with clay presentation from immersion participants …

In-Person Weekend Immersion Tuition:
FREE!!!
(includes meals, medicine, medicine-making supplies, plants, instruction and rustic camping does not include transportation)

Other things to know:

• Our immersions will be held at the Jane Minor BIPOC Community Medicine Garden located on Gayogohó:no’ land in so-called ithaca, new york

• Our meals will be delicious, seasonal, local and organic

• All clay, medicine making plants and materials will be provided

• Participants will go home with and abundance of medicine!

• Spaces for rustic camping are available and and very limited number of camping supplies are available to borrow

• Participants must provide their own transportation during the weekend

• We will be outdoors ALL weekend and will be following health safety protocols that will be informed by current trends happening at the time of our gathering. We will ask folks to test for Covid, prior to attending

• Friday and Saturday will be Black only for immersion participants, Sunday’s garden work party will be open to the whole community

• Full course details will be provided upon acceptance
